Lucia Santomo amava le storie. Non aveva una grande istruzione. Aveva frequentato solo la scuola elementare, ma amava le storie e quando aspettava trepidamente il primo figlio, era rimasta stregata dal fiero gesto della virtuosa matrona romana Lucrezia, così la bambina che vide la luce in un tempestoso mattino di dicembre, ricevette al fonte battesimale quel nome ricco di storia e di destino. La seconda figlia, nata un anno dopo, ebbe quello di una potente regina del Medioevo, Eleonora. Il marito non aveva messo bocca nella scelta dei nomi. Quali altri nomi poteva poi suggerire alla moglie? Quello di Grazia che era stato di sua madre? Mai più. E Lucrezia ed Eleonora erano stati.

This novel is set in the years of Fascism and the war; it is the story of an honest and prosperous family of a village in central Italy, faithful to the Law and the State, until the events of those years shake their certainties. It is also the story of a young girl, a daughter who won’t accept the future of obedient wife and mother that is expected of her, and tries to find her independence through work. Before winning her independence she will acquire a new social awareness, and find a love that must help her to face the pain that that dark period will bring to her family and to the whole of Italy.
The novel is partly based on the stories the writer’s mother used to tell her daughter, of a Fascist party official, who later became a minister of Mussolini’s government, who used to come to their home, and the discussions and doubts that marked that period of her life.
